Rou Jia Mo – The World’s Oldest Sandwich with a Modern Twist
Rou Jia Mo (肉夹馍), also known as the Chinese pork burger, is an ancient classic from China’s Shaanxi province. This meat-filled bun is considered the oldest sandwich in the world. Once a staple for travelers and laborers, it's now a favorite among street food lovers around the globe.

Preparation
• Grill: 4–5 minutes per side
• Oven: 180°C, 5–7 minutes
• Air fryer: approx. 10 minutes at 180°C
Slice open one side of the bun (like a pita) and fill it with your favorite ingredients.

 


Recipe: Rou Jia Mo with Chashu Pork Belly and Refreshing Cucumber Salad
Ingredients for 4 sandwiches

Filling

1 pack Okaya Chashu Pork Belly Cooked & Marinated (or Chashu Chicken)
1 tbsp hoisin sauce
Fresh coriander
Pickled red onion
Green or red chili
Cucumber salad (see below)

Cucumber Salad

1 cucumber
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp rice vinegar
½ tbsp sugar
1 tsp sesame oil
1 clove garlic, grated
Optional: chili oil
Buns

4 Rou Jia Mo buns (Lao Tong Guan-style)
Instructions

Heat the pork belly in a pan and sear lightly.
Make the cucumber salad: salt the cucumber slices and let them rest for 10 minutes. Squeeze out excess moisture, then mix with the remaining ingredients.
Toast the buns according to the instructions.
Finely slice the meat, coriander, onion, and chili. Toss with hoisin sauce.
Slice open the bun and fill with warm meat and cucumber salad. Serve immediately.
